Background: 30-year career in the U.S. State Department before joining the private sector in 1996; diplomatic career focused on Asia and included assignments in Tokyo, Beijing, Taipei, Hong Kong, Saigon, with tours in Vienna and Oslo. He served as Deputy Consul General in Hong Kong, Economic Counselor in Beijing and Director of the State Department's offices responsible for Taiwan, Korean and Southeast Asian affairs.
After leaving government, he worked during 1996-98 as Senior Associate at the Asia Pacific Policy Center, a non-profit institution in Washington, where he was a writer, speaker and consultant on a wide variety of Asian issues. He served as the Chair of the East Asian Area Studies course at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute from 1998 to 2000. He has a degree in East Asian Studies from Princeton University. He is proficient in Chinese and Norwegian.
