Background: International economist, China scholar and consultant. An author of many articles on economic reforms in China; Visiting Fellow at the Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS); World Bank from 1970-98, where he served as Senior Advisor for East Asia, 1997-98 (during the Asian financial crisis period); Chief Resident Mission Beijing, 1993-97; Director Latin American and North African programs, 1987-93; Division Chief for Mexico, 1983-87 and Resident Chief Economist in Jakarta, Indonesia, 1979-83.
He also carried out various assignments in Africa as economic analyst, 1970-79. Before jointing the World Bank he was Economic Advisor to the Government of Zambia, Africa, 1965-67 and 1968-70; UNCTAD (Geneva) consultant on global non-ferrous metal markets, 1968; Lecturer at Amsterdam University, 1964; Research Fellow at the Brookings Institution, Washington DC, 1963.
