CONCENTRATION Students concentrating in Canadian Studies must take at least 4 courses within the field. In addition, students are required to take the Western Hemisphere Studies (WHS) core course, Theory and Practice of Politics in Latin America (810.700), and 1 additional Latin American Studies course. Canadian Studies Program students who wish to qualify for WHS internship opportunities in Latin America must pass the Latin American History Exam.
Tracks Students must select one of two Canadian Studies tracks: - Canada and Latin America: See concentration requirements above. No further requirements are necessary to complete this track.
- Canada and Energy: Students choosing this track must take Facing the Oil Problem: The United States, Canada, OPEC and the World (SA.680.759) as one of their 4 Canadian Studies courses. They must take Energy in the Americas: Conflict, Cooperation and Future Prospects (SA.810.761), and Theory and Practice of Politics in Latin America (SA.810.700) as their two Latin American Studies courses.
INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS All candidates for the M.A. degree must complete a concentration in the field of International Economics by taking 4-6 economics courses at SAIS.� Students can also pursue a specialization within International Economics by taking additional course work. CORE COURSES All SAIS students must pass 2 core exams and/or courses. If the cores are not completed by the start of the final semester, the student must enroll in the core course(s). LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Canadian Studies MA candidates must pass exams to demonstrate proficiency in French. Under special circumstances, Spanish or Portuguese may fulfill the requirement (consult with the Canadian Studies program office). All non-native English speakers are required to pass an English placement exam upon entering SAIS. Native French (Spanish or Portuguese) speakers must pass proficiency in a second language which can include English. CAPSTONE Canadian Studies concentrators must complete ONE of the following capstones: 1. A twenty-page research paper whose focus and subject matter has been approved by the director 2. A twenty-page written report that draws conclusions about Canadian Studies or Canada-U.S. relations based on an internship undertaken while at SAIS 3. A twenty-page written report based on a policy trip in which the student participated in while at SAIS 4. MA Oral Exam (to compete for honors—if eligible) A total of 16 courses taken for credit are required for an MA degree (unless a student has advanced standing or is in a dual-degree program).
