Canadian Studies | Academic Requirements

Core Exams

* It is strongly encouraged that the core requirement be met by the end of the second semester.

Students must pass two of the following four core examinations: Comparative National Systems (100.750); American Foreign Policy Since World War II (100.720); Theories of International Relations (100.761), and Evolution of the International System (100.771)

Language

French. Under special circumstances, Spanish or Portuguese may fulfill the requirement (consult with Program Office).

International Economics Requirements

  1. Microeconomics (300.700)*
  2. Macroeconomics (300.701)*
  3. International Trade Theory (300.707) Core
  4. International Monetary Theory (300.708) Core
  5. International Economics Elective
  6. International Economics Elective

* Either take and pass course or waive course through placement test

** Students waiving Microeconomics and Macroeconomics must take at least 2 elective Economics courses, in addition to the 2 Economics core courses. Students taking Microeconomics and Macroeconomics must take a total of 6 Economics courses

Western Hemisphere Studies (WHS)/
Canadian Studies Program Requirements:

Canadian Studies Program students who wish to qualify for WHS internship opportunities in Latin America must pass the Latin American History Exam.

  1. WHS core course: Theory and Practice of Politics in Latin America (810.700)
  2. Latin American Studies Course
  3. Canadian Studies course
  4. Canadian Studies course
  5. Canadian Studies course
  6. Canadian Studies course

Electives (MA Students must take a total of at least 16 non-language courses)

*All the courses listed above, except for language courses, count toward the fulfillment of the 16-course requirement.
