Asian Studies Overview | Languages

Students in Asian Studies are expected to devote considerable time to the study of an Asian language (Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese, depending on their concentrations).  Students are expected to demonstrate to examiners their ability to read contemporary economic, political and social writings and to converse about their contents. The language instructors are prepared to explain the language requirements in greater detail. Students who have not studied their chosen language before coming to SAIS should be prepared to study intensively during the summer as well as the fall and spring semesters both years.

Students who are enrolled in dual-degree programs should be aware that they will have only three terms in which to study their chosen language, time usually insufficient to pass the language examination unless the student is already advanced in her/his language studies.

Ph.D. candidates must demonstrate competence in two Asian languages, or in one Asian language and in quantitative methods of analysis.
