Requirements for the International Relations of Asia (AsiaIR) Specialization Asian Studies' students have the option of pursuing a specialization in the International Relations of Asia (AsiaIR). AsiaIR offers students a way to focus on Asia as a whole and on the international relationships and trends that are increasingly knitting the region together. In AsiaIR, students will take courses on region-wide subjects while also meeting the course and language requirements of one of the five Asian Studies' regional concentrations. A minimum of eight courses are required to complete both the Asian Studies' regional concentration and the AsiaIR specialization. Students specializing in AsiaIR are encouraged to participate in the Asian Studies' crisis simulation or Asian Studies' student conference. Upon successful completion of the AsiaIR specialization, a note will be added to the SAIS transcript. The student's Asian Studies' regional program advisor will provide advice on the AsiaIR requirements. Interested students should also meet with Professor Carla Freeman who serves as coordinator for the AsiaIR specialization. AsiaIR SPECIALIZATION Students electing to complement their Asian Studies' regional concentration with an AsiaIR specialization must fulfill the requirements of one of the following regional programs (Four required courses in that region, plus two electives outside of that region. The exception is Korea with three Korea courses and three electives outside of that region--one must be from China Studies and one must be from Japan Studies): - Asia/China
- Asia/Japan
- Asia/Korea
- Asia/South Asia
- Asia/Southeast Asia
Students must take a minimum of eight courses relevant to Asia's international relations from the list of *AsiaIR specialization courses for credit. - All AsiaIR students must take either International Relations of Asia: the Policy Process (SA.755.702) or International Relations of Asia After World War II (SA.755.705).
- China, Korea and Japan Studies students are encouraged to take the companion course on the International Relations of Asia before World War II (SA.755.701) and/or International Relations of Northeast Asia (SA.755.713).
- SA and SEA Studies students are encouraged to take International Relations of South Asia (SA.790.701) and International Relations of Southeast Asia (SA.770.712) respectively.
Please note: Many courses provide credit toward both the Asian Studies' sub-regional concentration and AsiaIR requirements. The student's Asian Studies regional concentration advisor will provide advice on these requirements. Many times students use their two electives outside of their region plus two additional courses to fulfill the AsiaIR specialization requirements. CORE COURSES All SAIS students must pass 2 core exams and/or courses. Students specializing in AsiaIR must pass Theories of International Relations as one of their core requirements prior to the start of their third semester. If the core is not completed by the start of their final semester, the student must enroll in the course. *AsiaIR SPECIALIZATION COURSES FOR CREDIT: SA.755.510 Asian Energy Security SA.755.701 International Relations of Asia Before WWII SA.755.702 International Relations of Asia: The Policy Process SA.755.703 Contentious Politics in Asia: From Riots to Terrorism SA.755.704 Current Asian Security Issues SA.755.705 International Relations of Asia After WWII SA.755.706 Asian Economic Development SA.755.707 Democracy and Human Rights in Asia SA.755.708 Advanced Seminar on the International Politics of Asia SA.755.712 Covert Action and Foreign Policy in Asia SA.755.713 International Relations of Northeast Asia SA.755.714 Risk Management in Asia SA.755.xxx Theories of Asian International Relations SA.755.xxx Politics of the Military in China and Southeast Asia SA.750.702 Chinese Foreign Policy SA.750.716 China and Global Issues in the 21st Century SA.750.717 US-China Relations SA.750.729 Taiwan and Cross-Strait Relations SA.750.904 China's Reforms and Changing Role in the Global Economy SA.760.710 Northeast Asia and the Islamic World SA.760.738 Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy SA.760.742 Japanese and International Finance SA.760.749 The US-Japan Relationship in Global Context SA.760.751 History of Japan's Emergence as a World Power SA.765.710 US Diplomacy toward the Two Koreas SA.765.712 Two Koreas Research & Record SA.770.712 International Relations of Southeast Asia SA.770.630 Southeast Asia and the Rise of China SA.770.826 Politics of Indochina SA.790.701 International Relations of South Asia SA.790.715 South Asia, al Qaeda and the Rise of International Terrorism SA.790.717 Indian Defense and Security Issues SA.790.714 Regional Security Issues in South Asia *This list may be incomplete.
