Co-curricular Activities

The African Studies Program sponsors weekly speakers and the annual Conference on Africa. In addition, the Hopkins All-UniversitySeminar on Africa (HAUSA) brings together Africanists from the university’s various disciplines and academic ranks to present current research on a variety of topics. The seminar convenes at a different campus of the university each year.

Research Opportunities

Students may have the opportunity to conduct independent research through a summer field program, individual research projects, and occasional intersession trips.

A six-week independent study field program to Senegal, Ghana or Tunisia is an option between the first and second year. Students should develop a project proposal in the Fall term, to be submitted by March of the spring semester. Proficiency in Arabic or French is required for Tunisia, proficiency in French for Senegal.

Recent study trips and research projects have included:

  • (Cameroon), “China’s Engagement in Africa: the Case of Cameroon”
  • (Kenya), “Success and Shortcomings of Kenya’s Counterterrorism Efforts”
  • (Kenya), “The Role of Kenya’s Civil Society in the Constitution Review Process”
  • (Kenya) “Displaced Persons and Land-Related Violence in Kenya”
  • (Ghana), “Democracy and Traditional Rule in Ghana”
  • (Ghana) “Political Survival and Regime Change in Africa”
  • (Ghana) “The Evolving Character of Ghanaian Democracy”
  • (Malawi and Zambia), “Developing Transport Linkages in SADC”
  • (Nigeria) “Violence and Resources in the Niger Delta”
  • (Senegal) “African Migrants to Europe: The West African Coastal Link”

Internship Opportunities

African Studies students regularly receive internships in the U.S. and in Africa. These encompass a range of organizations in government, non-governmental institutions, and the private sector. Students have had access to overseas internships in Nigeria, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Cameroon, and Malawi, among many others.

Travel Opportunities

On an occasional basis, the Program offers study trips to students during inter-session and summer periods. Recent trips have included Nigeria, Ghana, and China.
