Co-curricular Activities The African Studies Program sponsors weekly speakers and the annual Conference on Africa. In addition, the Hopkins All-UniversitySeminar on Africa (HAUSA) brings together Africanists from the university’s various disciplines and academic ranks to present current research on a variety of topics. The seminar convenes at a different campus of the university each year. Research Opportunities Students may have the opportunity to conduct research on their own projects during a six-week independent study field trip to Senegal, Ghana or Tunisia between the first and second year. Students should pre-register during the first semester; the proposal deadline date is in January of the spring semester. Proficiency in Arabic or French is required for Tunisia, proficiency in French for Senegal. Internship Opportunities African Studies students regularly receive internships in the U.S. and in Africa. These encompass a range of organizations in government, non-governmental institutions, and the private sector. Students have had access to overseas internships in Nigeria, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Cameroon, and Malawi, among many others. Travel Opportunities On an occasional basis, the Program offers study trips to students during inter-session and summer periods. Recent trips have included Nigeria, Ghana, and China.
