Research Opportunities

Small stipends are available for AFP-related research, at the Director's discretion.

International Study Trips

The American Foreign Policy Program offers its students the opportunity to take part in international study trips, contingent on available funding. In academic year 2010-2011, AFP sent students on a study trip to China. Participants were chosen by a competitive selection process. A selection panel reviewed the applications to determine commitment and applicability of the study trip to students' interests and goals.

China: March 18 - 26, 2011
During their visit in China, students met with representatives from the academic, diplomatic, public sector, private sector, and media communities, with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of the various forces at work in the changing dynamics of US-Sino relations.

Crisis Simulation

Crisis Simulation is an annual program co-sponsored with the Conflict Management and Strategic Studies programs. The program is directed by Professor Eliot Cohen and draws on experienced alumni. Approximately 50 students participate including about 10 students who enroll in the crisis simulation seminar for credit. The seminar has the primary responsibility for designing and managing crisis activities. The crisis simulation is a chance for SAIS students to assume the roles of national and international leaders and manage challenging crises with political, military, economic and social components. Crisis Simulation 2009 will test your leadership, decision-making ability, and communication skills.
