SAIS offers two non-degree certificates for students and professionals. The certificates can serve as an important credential for those working in an increasingly complex global environment. Each certificate requires a series of four graduate-level courses. Certificates can be completed in as few as two summers by working at a rigorous pace or over an extended period of time. Certificate in International Studies
The certificate offers a broad overview of international relations and allows for a concentration in a series of related courses for those students wishing to specialize. It also offers general training for those wishing to achieve a wider appreciation for international politics. The certificate is offered to non-degree students who successfully complete a series of four courses taken from any of the Summer Courses with the exception of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.
Required course: Theories of International Relations. Certificate in International Development
The certificate incorporates an interdisciplinary approach to the study of developing countries. It offers an opportunity to conceptualize development problems through social, political and economic aspects of development. This certificate is offered to non-degree students who successfully complete a series of four courses within the International Development curriculum. Eligible courses are noted in the descriptions that appear in the Summer Courses section of this Web site.
Required courses: Comparative National Systems and Introduction to Economic Development. General Certificate Information
Once non-degree students are accepted to SAIS Summer Programs, they can request to work toward a certificate. Certificate candidates must schedule an appointment to meet with an adviser and fill out the Certificate Plan of Action Form. Candidates for certificate programs may not count audited courses toward a certificate. The courses Microeconomics and Macroeconomics do not count toward either certificate. A "B-" is the lowest passing grade at SAIS. A “C” is a failing grade. Please be aware that courses for which a failing grade is obtained do not count toward either certificate. If a non-degree student receives a failing grade, he or she is not eligible to take additional coursework at SAIS. Students may choose to appeal this decision to the Office of Summer Programs and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, who will make the final determination. At that time, the student may be required to pay full tuition and take the course again or may be dismissed from taking any additional courses at SAIS. Students may take additional courses during the fall and spring semesters on a space-available basis only to complete their certificates.
