Part-Time and Non-Degree Programs | Overview

The application deadline for fall 2008 semester courses has passed.  No exceptions will be made.

SAIS accepts a limited number of part-time, non-degree students for study during the fall and spring semesters. Non-degree students may take a maximum of two courses per semester and a maximum of four courses overall for credit or audit. They may audit non-language courses with the instructor's permission by paying full tuition and following the standard application procedures. Students from other Johns Hopkins University divisions should check with their home divisions regarding interdivisional registration requirements and procedures. Please be aware that SAIS degree students have priority when registering for classes and that enrollment will be offered to non-degree students on a space-available basis only. As of the fall 2007 semester, non-degree students are not eligible to apply for limited enrollment courses.

Courses are available in areas such as international relations theory, policy studies, development and regional studies. Most courses are offered during daytime hours, though a limited number of courses are held in the evening. Non-degree students who would like to obtain a credential from SAIS over an extended period of time may pursue a SAIS certificate. Those who are interested in specialized language study emphasizing political, economic and international topics may apply for courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai or Vietnamese. Please be aware that not all languages or language levels will be offered in a given semester and that class schedules may not be finalized until after the start of the semester. Nearly all language classes in the fall and spring are held during daytime hours. Click here for information about the evening courses offered through the SAIS Summer Language Institute.

Non-degree students tend to be affiliated with U.S. government agencies, the armed forces, corporations, foreign governments and other organizations engaged in international affairs. They are also graduate students at other area universities. Most non-degree students take classes through SAIS Summer Programs. Summer courses are offered during convenient evening hours at a lower tuition rate. Summer registration is handled on a first-come, first-serve basis whereas all fall and spring enrollment is subject to the space constraints described above.

International applicants, please note that SAIS is unable to offer visa assistance for non-degree study during the fall or spring semesters. However, SAIS is able to offer student visa assistance for certain types of summer study.

Please be aware that part-time, non-degree admission in no way implies admission to the SAIS M.A., M.I.P.P. or Ph.D. degree programs. If you apply separately for admission to the M.A. program at a later date and are accepted, credit can be given for up to four non-language courses taken on a non-degree basis; for the M.I.P.P. of Ph.D. programs, credit can be given for up to two non-language courses.
