Spanish Language Program | Registration and Placement Exams

Online language registration opens the first day of language classes.

Novice Spanish

Beginners fluent in a romance language should register in Novice Spanish, Section 1 (SA.910.710.01). Students with no background in Spanish or any other romance language should register in Novice Spanish, Section 2 (SA.910.710.02)

Placement Exams

All new students with a background in Spanish need to take the online Spanish placement exam in order to be placed in a class. Students from the Bologna campus may be required to take the exam for diagnostic purposes only. We will place them in the class that follows the level taken in Bologna.

The Spanish placement exam comprises two parts: (a) an online written exam, and (b) an on-site oral interview. Students are required to take the online written exam prior to meeting for their oral interview. Please follow these steps:

  1. Take the online placement test. The password is “sais.”
  2. Sign up for a fifteen-minute oral interview. The sign-up sheet is posted in Room 330 of the Rome Building.
  3. At the end of the interview, you will be advised which course to take.
  4. Register on ISIS. Online registration opens the first day of language classes.

No. You can only take the online test once. If you take it more than once, we will only consider the lowest grade.

What happens if I register without taking the placement exams?
You will eventually be found out and asked to leave the class.

I am a returning student and did intensive Spanish instruction during the break. Can I take the placement tests to see if I can skip a level?
Yes, you can.
