Russian Language Program | Summer Language Institute

Program Dates: June 3 – July 25

Offers eight weeks of intensive language training in Russian for generalists and practitioners of international relations. Provides the only Political Russian program in the United States that emphasizes socio-political, trade and military usage. Introduces students to the all-important context of language, which is political culture itself. This context aids in understanding change, a must for those who study the former Soviet Union.  Vocabulary, text materials and multimedia materials all reflect this unique orientation. Each participant is expected to work with audiotapes and video and complete two to three hours of self-study daily. Political Russian courses are offered for eight graduate-level credits each.

Basic Russian

Course Number: 909.200

Emphasizes basic grammar and conversation and elementary political vocabulary.  Introduces readings in the Russian press at the end of the course. Uses a basic textbook.

Intermediate Political Russian I

Course Number: 909.201

Focuses on a grammar review and political vocabulary building, readings in the Russian press, listening skills development and conversation on international affairs issues. Prerequisite: At least one year of college-level instruction or equivalent and a placement interview.

Intermediate Political Russian II

Course Number: 909.202

Emphasizes more sophisticated grammar and further development of political vocabulary. Explores nuances in readings. Uses speaking and listening exercises to emphasize politics, national security issues and socio-economics. Introduces strategies of paragraphed speech. Prerequisite: Two years of college-level instruction or equivalent and a placement interview.

Advanced Political Russian

Course Number: 909.203

Focuses on complete grammar control and political argument. Examines journalistic styles and subtleties. Conducts discussions and debates on political environment, economic and military issues.  Continues development of strategies for paragraphed speech continues along with listening to longer broadcasts. Prerequisite: Three to four years of college-level instruction and a placement interview.
