Introduction The Language Studies Program offers classes that assist students in successfully meeting the language requirements for graduation. In addition, language classes offer a unique opportunity to develop vocabulary and communication skills that are relevant to students’ academic studies and career goals. Students who pass the proficiency examination upon arrival at SAIS or after their first or second semester are encouraged to continue their language learning by enrolling in post-proficiency courses or to begin the study of a new language. Post-proficiency courses are offered only to groups of five or more who commit not to withdraw from the course. The courses usually offer a smaller number of class contact hours than proficiency courses. Placement examinations in all languages are administered during the registration and orientation session at the beginning of each semester. Many students find it useful to enroll in intensive summer language programs between their first and second years to enhance their language study progress. This is particularly helpful for students studying Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or Russian. SAIS offers each of these languages in its Summer Programs. Multimedia Center The Multimedia Center is an integral part of the Language Studies Program. Its goal is to provide support and offer alternative methods for students to achieve their required language proficiency level. Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the center’s resources, which include, but are not limited to, access to satellite programming in more than 14 languages, the award-winning Tell Me More language-learning software and a small audiovisual lending library.
