The Latin American Studies Program, part of the Western Hemisphere Program, offers summer internships in Brazil to its students interested in fostering and deepening their knowledge of Brazilian society and working environment. In order to qualify for this internship, the student should be proficient in Portuguese, having attained at least the Intermediate Mid level. An interview to assess this proficiency level usually takes place in March before spring break. Students interested in participating in these internships should contact Anne McKenzie, WHP Internship Coordinator, Nitze 502, Phone 202-663-5738, Fax 202-663-5609, email: amckenzie@jhu.edu. Students from other programs should also contact Anne McKenzie to learn about their options. As a preparation for his/her internship, the student is required to attend a 3-week course in Rio de Janeiro run by Professor Knight from May to early June, times to be negotiated depending on the circumstances and needs involved. Students attend lectures given by Brazilian experts on subjects of interest to the students, participate in cultural events and take urban field trips to explore and compare neighborhoods and sites.
