The Language Technology Center (LTC) is a digital learning center at the disposal of all SAIS students and faculty interested in foreign languages and cultures, located in the Language Studies Program (LSP), on the third floor of the Rome building. The LTC is open to SAIS students, full-time, part-time language faculty, and language teaching assistants. In order to use the LTC, you would need your JHU username and password. You will be able to access all the AV/PC work-stations (remember to log out the PC after use). You will need your JHED I.D. to borrow the equipment and/or material available at the Front Desk. Please note that some workshops and pronunciation classes take place in the LTC Lab; you can check the LTC calendar by clicking here. Please note that food or drinks are not allowed in the LTC. The LTC is equipped to support individual and group learning with 13 AV/PC work stations - 9 stations for self-study and 4 stations for collaborative learning - with Internet access, satellite TV, on-line and commercialized multimedia resources, as well as a variety of language learning packages - The LTC is also equipped with 4 laptop work stations. The LTC multifunctional printer is connected to all work stations and allows printing, copying, and scanning.
The LTC offers technological support for students enrolled in the LSP foreign language classes who wish to use computer technologies to conduct language homework assigned by their instructor, and/or develop language skills at their own pace.
Great emphasis is placed on oral and aural skills and SAIS students are expected to make full use of the LTC facilities - either on site or online. The amount of time that should be spent in the Center or on the online learning platforms depends to a large extent on the degree of preparedness and aptitude of the individual students. Students should consult their language instructors on this subject.
The LTC is also at the service of language faculty who want to integrate technology into their teaching practice. Instructional technology workshops for faculty – both in the form of small group workshop sessions and personalized one-to-one training and consulting - are offered during the academic year to quickly enable faculty and Teaching Assistants to use technology to enhance their language classes. Workshops focus on effective use of technology to achieve highest impact on student learning, and content is designed to be accessible also online if faculty have teaching commitments during the scheduled workshop.
Foreign language materials are also available on loan to all SAIS students: a selection of foreign newspapers and magazines, language books, e-books, CDs and DVDs, mp3, video files. Please contact the coordinator of the language you are interested in for accessing the printed or media material. Language methodology books on effective instruction and assessment strategies for teaching foreign languages are available for loan to all language faculty. |
