Korean Language Program

The Korean language was established as a proficiency language with the inauguration of the US Korea Institute at SAIS in Fall 2006. This unique graduate level program focuses not only on Korean social and cultural issues but also on topics related to Korean politics, economics, diplomacy, and defense as well as international affairs. The curricular enrichments aim at the proficiency graduation requirements of the intermediate mid level in reading and speaking, and the intermediate low level in listening.

All students who are interested in taking Korean as a proficiency language or as a non-proficiency language are welcome in our program. The Korean classes are from Level I (Novice ) to Level IV (Intermediate Mid), but the classes offered each semester vary depending on the enrollment of students and the results of the placement exams in reading, grammar, listening, and speaking, which students are required to take as they enter the program. Once students pass the proficiency exams, post-proficiency Korean is available for them to further improve their linguistic skills and to gain more sophisticated communicative strategies.

For further information on the program and testing, please contact Kyong Mi Tak at ktak1@jhu.edu.
