The Italian Program at SAIS offers various levels of content-based courses and uses a variety of authentic sources. All courses deal with politics, culture, and international affairs in addition to grammar review. The Intermediate level courses (Mid Intermediate and High Intermediate) expand students' basic language skills and vocabulary while reinforcing grammar. At the Advanced level, students' world of language is expanded as they are exposed to a greater number of authentic language resources. Listening materials consist of extended newscasts or videos and authentic recordings from the worldwide web and speeches. Reading materials include feature-length articles on politics, international relations and current events. All levels carry out political discussions, class debates, and class presentations. To satisfy the language requirement in Italian, students need to achieve the Intermediate-High level in speaking, listening and reading and Intermediate Mid in writing. Post proficiency courses are offered once the student completes these requirements. Both proficiency-track and non-proficiency track students are welcome to attend Italian courses. Italian-language lunch gatherings, film viewings and occasional guest speakers are also held regularly.
