DAS DEUTSCHE PROGRAMM German leads the European Union in number of native speakers and has emerged as a major language of communication in Central and Eastern Europe as well. Knowledge of German offers great opportunities in international politics, business development, sciences and cultural affairs. It prepares you for the Germany and other German-speaking countries as well as for Europe and for the world. The SAIS German Program offers a uniquely interdisciplinary and innovative language learning experience through the study of culture, politics, intellectual thought, economy and international affairs. The Program prepares students to excel in the German language and to acquire an in-depth understanding of the German-speaking world, including its diverse cultures and histories, its domestic as well as transatlantic and global politics. Courses range from the beginning to the advanced level and are taught in German by native speakers who are recognized professionals in foreign language instruction and in German Studies. Throughout the semester, the Program also offers German film screenings, lunch gatherings as well as roundtable discussions with renowned guest speakers from academia, politics, and media. A special feature is the two-week long German Studies Summer Program which will take place in Berlin and Eastern Germany from June 1 to 15, 2008. The program is entitled "The Berlin Republic and its Eastern Federal States in the New Europe." The German Program has received a generous grant by the "Transaltantik-Programm" of the German Government and SAIS support to conduct the program this year.
