Eligibility
- Incoming students: ONLY students who passed Placement (both written and oral) and were infromed by Profs De Souza or Russelburg can take the Proficiency.
- Non-incoming students: Students who have completed Level 4 at SAIS can take the Proficiency. Graduating students who have completed Level 3 can take the Proficiency.
Times given Proficiency exams (Examens de compétence) are offered four times per academic year, early September, early December, late January and late April. The Exam Reading (Compréhension Ecrite) ; Writing (Expression Ecrite) ; Listening (Compréhension Orale) and Speaking (Expression Orale) Reading and Listening Exams: Answers may be provided in French OR in English. Speaking exam: Students come individually at a preset time of their choice during the hours listed above to meet with a jury of 3 members; they select a time by signing up on a list of available time slots posted on Dr De Souza's door (Rome 200).The exam lasts 15 to 20 minutes. The folllowing grades or higher must be obtained to pass Proficiency Reading, Listening, Speaking: Intermediate High Writing : Intermediate Mid Results All the results are posted on the web on the evening of the day when the exam is offered under code numbers selected by students. See the index page of the French program. Suggestions Proficiency exams are confidential; only the student who has taken the exam may have access to his/her copy. We recommend reviewing grammar through a grammar book or through our Internet Grammaire. Students should also review the Vocabulaire Spécialisé for International Affairs.
