How many English Proficiency Examinations are international students required to take? International students whose native language is not English are required to take four English proficiency examinations in order to graduate: Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking. When do international students take English Proficiency Exams? All students whose native language is not English are required to take the English Proficiency Examinations during the registration and orientation period of their first semester at SAIS. Are any students exempt from the above requirements? Yes. Students who have completed their high school education at a school where the language of instruction was English are not required to take the examinations. However, these exempt students must meet with the Coordinator of the English Program to process the exemption paperwork during the registration and orientation period of their first semester at SAIS. What courses are offered by the English Program? The SAIS English Program typically offers Effective Writing classes and Listening/Speaking for International Relations classes at the Advanced High and Superior levels. Students who do not pass their proficiency examinations are required to take these classes during their first semester.
