The SAIS Education

The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C., is a world-renowned graduate school devoted to the study of international relations.

Since its founding in 1943 by statesmen Paul H. Nitze and Christian Herter, SAIS has provided a professional education that adheres to the highest standards of scholarship while taking a practical approach to training students for international leadership.

Students conduct scholarly research on topical issues confronting governments and organizations around the world and disseminate their findings to a broad audience of policy leaders engaged in international political and economic affairs. SAIS also offers unique educational opportunities for mid-career professionals already engaged in international affairs.

The SAIS interdisciplinary program allows students to concentrate in either a region of the world or a functional area of international relations while pursuing studies in international economics and language. This unique program offers a solid foundation in economic and policy analysis skills coupled with a second language proficiency and cultural appreciation. SAIS is truly international, both in its perspective and in its presence, providing a graduate professional education in the dynamic settings of campuses on three continents in Washington, D.C., Bologna, Italy, and Nanjing, China.

Elements of SAIS

A problem-solving approach to the conduct of foreign policy has benefited more than 13,000 SAIS alumni who work in the public, private and nonprofit sectors around the world. SAIS alumni work for government agencies, international organizations, investment firms, charitable organizations, financial institutions and businesses and in the fields of diplomacy, education, finance, research, consulting and journalism.

SAIS is a pioneer in regional studies, first offering a Middle East Studies Program in 1946. Since then, the school has developed strong programs in regional studies representing all corners of the globe. SAIS prepares its students with excellent programs in international relations and with a thorough understanding of the culture, theory and history required for effective leadership in international affairs. A sound grounding in the principles and analytical tools of economics is essential to understanding international relations. This preparation is required to comprehend not only the conventional issues of trade and finance, but also poverty and development, management of the global climate and other transnational resources and the process of political modernization and good governance. SAIS requires students to complete undergraduate-level course work in economic principles before enrollment, and then makes the commitment to train these students in economic theory, policy and the quantitative tools necessary to enhance their professional career potential.

SAIS graduates are known for their language capabilities. Because SAIS is deeply committed to the premise that professionals in international service need strong communication skills to work effectively with their counterparts, all M.A. and Ph.D. candidates must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language. The SAIS Language Studies Program offers courses in 16 languages, with each course designed specifically for the professional needs of SAIS graduates.

In each of these areas—international relations, regional studies, economics and languages—the training at SAIS is rigorous, demanding and rewarding. SAIS welcomes applications from those willing to meet the challenge.

SAIS offers three degree programs and enrolls about 550 full-time students at the campus in Washington, D.C., 185 students at its Bologna campus and 100 students at the campus in Nanjing. The majority of applicants pursue the two-year Master of Arts (M.A.) program in international relations. A one-year course of study leading to the Master of International Public Policy (M.I.P.P.) degree serves the advanced educational needs of mid-career professionals with substantial experience in international affairs. Selected programs accept a small number of candidates in the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program.

SAIS also provides several joint-degree options for students wishing to combine the strengths and benefits of the SAIS education with the particular offerings of another professional program.
