The Strategic Studies Program explores the relationship between politics and the many kinds of military power, from the use of terror by small, non-state groups to the threatened use of nuclear weapons. Building on core concepts taught in the course Strategy and Policy, the program allows students to pursue interests in diverse aspects of security as well as develop a variety of analytic and practical skills. All students in Strategic Studies must take Strategy and Policy, ordinarily in their first semester at SAIS. Thereafter, there are no requirements beyond those that apply to all International Relations concentrators, although the Research Seminar is recommended for students interested in pursuing further graduate study or in conducting original work in the field. Students studying at the Bologna Center may concentrate in Strategic Studies. Students should note: Dual concentrations are not permitted in Strategic Studies. For further information, please read the department's statement on dual concentrations. The requirements for all International Relations (IR) concentrators involve taking 6 courses in the IR field and one of the core examinations must be Theories of International Relations (100.761). Please see the link below for specific program requirements. International Relations: Strategic Studies Degree Plan
