Professor Scott Barrett Shares ‘Piece’ of Nobel Prize When the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change received the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore on October 12th, the IPCC was quick to acknowledge the contribution of its many author-scholars, including Scott Barrett, director of the SAIS International Policy Program.
Barrett received a congratulatory letter from the leadership of IPCC, thanking him and his colleagues for their efforts in producing several compelling reports on climate change that served as the basis for the prize. "This work has provided the foundation for the current recognition of IPCC as an authoritative voice on the climate system, the impacts of climate change and ways to avoid it. You all can be proud of this achievement," the letter said. Barrett, who recently published a new book, Why Cooperate? The Incentive to Supply Global Public Goods, was a lead author and contributing author to two of the IPCC assessment reports. "U.S. Global Health Policy" Speaker: Maurice Middleberg, Vice President for Public Policy, Global Health Council Maurice I. Middleberg is the Vice President for Public Policy at the Global Health Council. He is responsible for ensuring that the Council serves as an effective voice for global health through dialogue with the U.S. Government, UN agencies, developing country governments and other constituencies. Mr. Middleberg has been working in the field of global health for almost 25 years as an executive, program manager, analyst, advocate, teacher and writer. Prior to coming to the Global Health Council, Mr. Middleberg served as Executive Vice President of EngenderHealth, Director of Health for CARE, Director of the Options for Population Policy Program, Coordinator of the USAID/Niger Population Program, and Senior Research Associate at The Futures Group. "China's Quest for Energy Security in the Eyes of SAIS Energy Group" Between August 22 and 31, a dozen SAIS students traveled over 10,000 kilometers in China to understand the country's endeavor to tackle its energy and environmental challenges. They met a wide variety of people, including policymakers from the Chinese government, energy experts from Chinese think tanks, representatives from foreign oil companies, environmental NGO and Chinese energy companies. They also visited a series of projects, including a coal mine, a garbage recycling power plant, a bio-straw power plant, a water pumping storage power plant, and a nuclear power plant.
