The SAIS International Law and Organizations Program and Professor Ruth Wedgwood
invite you to a
Coffee and Conversation on "Life As a Judge on the Law of the Sea Tribunal" with Judge Helmut Tuerk
Monday, September 8, 2008, 4:30-6 p.m.
Room 812, Rome Building 1619 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C.
Please r.s.v.p. to Isabelle Talpain-Long, at itlong@jhu.edu. Coffee will be served.
At a time when the United States is considering whether to join the Law of the Sea Convention, the experience of a skilled practitioner in the area is pertinent.
Among the issues Judge Tuerk will discuss: “The Waning Freedom of Navigation of the Seas,” Combating Terrorism at Sea, the problems of landlocked states, and the contribution of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
This session should be of interest to people interested in environmental issues, the role of seapower in national defense, piracy and other threats to shipping, the role of international courts, and the pros and cons of treaty ratification.
Judge Tuerk was the long-time legal advisor on international law to the Austrian Foreign Ministry, chaired the Legal (Sixth) Committee of the U.N. General Assembly, and attended the negotiations on the Law of the Sea Convention.
Open to the Members of the SAIS community, as well as the public and the press.
