On April 24, 2008 SAIS dedicated the Bernard L. Schwartz Globalization Initiative Suite. Students, faculty, and administrators were in attendance to inaugurate the new space that houses the International Development Program and The Bernard L. Schwartz Forum on Constructive Capitalism, both under the direction of Professor Francis Fukuyama, the Bernard L. Schwartz Professor of International Political Economy. Cinnamon Dornsife, the Associate Director of the International Development program offered some introductory remarks: “Welcome, I am Cinnamon Dornsife, Acting Director of the International Development Program. I am pleased to welcome all of you here for the inauguration and formal opening of The Bernard L. Schwartz Globalization Initiative Suite. We are especially honored to have with us Mr. Bernard Schwartz, whose foundation, the Bernard and Irene Schwartz Foundation, has made possible so many of the achievements of the Forum on Constructive Capitalism and the International Development Program. Dr. Francis Fukuyama, Bernard Schwartz Professor of International Political Economy and Director of the International Development Program will be speaking on Development in American Foreign Policy. I would like to also acknowledge many special guests- Dean Jessica Einhorn, Associate Deans John Harrington, Bonnie Wilson, Amir Pasic, and Ted Baker, who as the former Senior Associate Dean for Finance, had the vision to make this entire floor a center with an exceptional learning atmosphere. I would like to acknowledge Robin Washington, who took the lead in organizing today’s opening and inauguration. The students who have benefited from scholarship assistance, the intersession trips to Guatemala in 2007 and Indonesia in 2008, as well as a range of internships in international development organizations throughout the developing world have also been beneficiaries of the generous support from the Bernard and Irene Schwartz Foundation. Just today, we learned that the excellence in teaching award will be going to Professor Melissa Thomas- the second year in a row this award has gone to an IDEV faculty member. The support you provide has made all this possible for our program. Now as part of the ongoing series on Constructive Capitalism, it is my pleasure to introduce Dr. Francis Fukuyama, Bernard Schwartz Professor of International Political Economy and Director of the International Development Program. Professor Fukuyama will be speaking on Development in American Foreign Policy.” Professor Fukuyama then spoke about the current state of development and relevant policy in American foreign relations. He emphasized the need to deepen American and international talent in this area and the importance of having the support to train professionals who will be able to lead the economic, social and political changes that will be needed to launch developing nations on paths of sustainable development. He mentioned the great return on investment received in supporting the students who train to advance development that is so vital to all our futures. An informal discussion about the upcoming presidential election engaged the audience. After the formal program, Mr. Schwartz, Professor Fukuyama and Dean Einhorn joined students and faculty at a festive reception in the newly dedicated Bernard L Schwartz Globalization Initiative Suite.
