Description
The International Development program and the African Studies program will be conducting a field study trip to Ghana over the January 2009 intersession.  The dates for the trip are Jan 2-17, 2009.  The trip will be designed to expose students to a range of different development agencies and projects, private-sector actors, and civil society organizations in Ghana, as well as give a chance to do some hands-on field research.  The planned field work will be divided into the following two broad themes, to be refined in September:

1) The Challenges of Democratic Governance
2) Civil Society and the Private Sector

The trip is preceded by a lecture series offered jointly by the two programs, led by Adjunct Lecturer Dr. Jon Kraus. is a noted expert on Ghana with over 40 years of experience studying the country; he will also co-lead the trip with IDEV Faculty Advisor and SAIS PhD candidate Andreas Hipple.  The lecture series - which will also include other experts on Ghana from other agencies, such as the World Bank, USAID, MCC, is designed to provide a thorough grounding in modern development issues in Ghana leading into the intersession trip.  The lectures will be offered on most Mondays 12:30 - 2 PM during fall semester.  The lectures series is required for students who will participate in the intersession trip, but it is open to all SAIS students.  The first session will be an introductory lecture by Professor Peter Lewis, Director of African Studies, on Friday September 5, 2:15 - 4:15 PM (BOB 736).  The following lectures will commence on Monday, September 15.  Come to the first lecture on September 5 if you are interested in the trip.  The selection of the participants will be made on Monday, September 8 - after the initial lecture.

Trip Dates
January 2-17, 2009

Eligibility
First and second year students from IDEV and African Studies programs who intend to attend all the pre-trip lectures are eligible to apply, though priority consideration will be given to graduating second year students. Note - there will be two African Studies students and seven IDEV students (one of whom will be the student trip coordinator).  All students who are selected to come on the trip (except the student trip coordinator) will be required to commit $500 in cost sharing to help offset the expenses.  Please Note: Core exams will conflict with the trip, therefore applicants should have already completed core exam requirements or be sure that they can complete them at a later examination date.

Faculty advisors:
Two adjunct faculty advisors will accompany the group to Ghana, as noted above.  Dr. Jon Kraus, adjunct lecturer of African Studies, and Andreas Hipple, SAIS PhD candidate.  They will also advise participating students in their fieldwork activities.

Expenses
Most of the participation costs (airfare, lodging, meals, in-country travel) of the selected students will be subsidized by the two programs; however, as noted above, each participant will be required to contribute $500 toward trip expenses.
