What and Why: The International Development Program and the China Studies Program will be conducting a field study trip to China over the January 2011 Intersession. The trip will be designed to expose students to a range of different development agencies and projects in China, as well as a chance to do some field research on research papers based on topics selected by individual students, in consultation with faculty advisors. These research papers, informed by field research during the practicum travel in China, will be presented to the SAIS community in late January 2011 and will be graded within the context of the course taken in preparation for the field visit.1 All students selected to go on the trip will have already taken or will be registered to take at least one IDEV regional requirement approved course in the China Studies Program in both Spring and Fall semester 2010 as follows: - Contemporary Chinese Politics
- China's Reform and Changing Role in the Global Economy
- Advanced Research Seminar on China and the Financial Crisis
- Governing China in the 21st Century - Challenges Ahead
- China's Environment and Development: Policy, Politics and Sustainability
- Grassroots China: The Social Consequences of Economic Reform
Trip Dates: January 2 - 18, 2011 Eligibility: First- and second-year students from IDEV and China Studies programs who have enrolled in one of the courses listed above in Fall semester 2010 (or who have taken one of the courses listed in Spring semester 2010) are eligible to apply. While first-year students may apply, priority consideration will be given to graduating second-year students. Core exams will conflict with the trip, therefore applicants should have already completed core exam requirements. The two programs have funding to support the participation of five students from each program, as well as two students from Nanjing for a total of twelve students. Knowledge of Mandarin is not required, but will be a great advantage on the Intersession trip. In-country translation will be provided for those who do not speak Mandarin. Application requirements: SAIS format resume, plus a cover letter outlining how the field practicum relates to your academic and career goals. Please list the relevant China Studies Program course you are taking (or have taken), as well as a title and short abstract for the paper you plan to further develop or write drawing on research from the trip. Advisors: The staff advisor is Ms. Zhaojin Ji. The IDEV student advisor is Ms. Lani Marsden. Professor Cinnamon Dornsife, Pieter Bottelier and Carla Freeman are the three faculty advisors and will accompany the group in China. Cost: The majority of the expenses (airfare, lodging, group transportation and group dinners) will be covered, though all students should expect to contribute a minimum of $200 toward their daily in-country expenses. In addition, students will be responsible for the visa fee of $130 as well as transportation to and from Dulles airport. Mark your calendars: An information session will be held on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 12:30pm in Rome 200. Students interested in applying should come to learn more about the trip and the application process. The application deadline is Friday, September 3, 2010. ______________________ 1 Outstanding papers can also be nominated for inclusion in the China Studies Working Paper Series. |
