International Development | Emerging Markets Specialization

Requirements for an Emerging Markets Specialization

1. Students electing to complement their regional concentration with an Emerging Markets specialization
must fulfill the requirements of their geographic specialization in one of the following regional programs:

  • Africa
  • Middle East
  • Western Hemisphere / Latin America
  • Russia and Eurasia
  • Asia: China / South Asia / Southeast Asia

Please note:

  • In addition to satisfying the requirements for these programs (typically six courses), students must take two courses in regional programs outside their area of concentration.
  • Some departments may allow students to take one of their six required courses outside their regional specialization.  Students should consult with their regional program directors.
  • Students who concentrate in International Development and other functional areas and who wish to add the Emerging Markets Specialization are welcome to contact Professor Sobol to discuss a possible course program.

2. To complete the emerging markets specialization, students must select as their two economics electives - the two courses required beyond Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Trade, and Monetary - courses relating to the emerging markets.  Examples of such courses include:
