The SAIS M.A. degree requires that the student complete a sequence of two (2) "fundamental" courses in economic theory, two (2) "core" courses in international economics, two (2) "elective" courses offered through the international economics program and, finally, satisfy the economics portion of the M.A. oral examination. Fundamental Economics Theory Courses
All students are required to pass Microeconomics and Macroeconomics for this concentration. This requirement can be met by either: (1) taking and passing the courses during an academic term (fall, spring or summer); (2) during Pre-Term; or (3) passing the corresponding waiver exam, if eligible. International Economics Core Courses
All students are required to pass the International Trade Theory and International Monetary Theory for this concentration. This requirement can be met by either: (1) taking and passing the courses during an academic term (fall, spring and summer) or (2) passing the corresponding waiver exam, if eligible. IMPORTANT:
Substitution Policy in the event of a waiver of International Trade or Monetary
A student who successfully passes either the trade or monetary waiver exam will be given credit for having completed that course, but will then be required to substitute the trade or monetary course with an economics elective course (any). This is in addition to the normal two economics electives that are part of the requirement for the M.A. degree. International Economics Elective Courses
All students must take and pass at least 2 additional economics courses of their choice, from among those which are offered through the International Economics Program. It is important to note that only courses that are listed under the International Economics Program are considered acceptable electives for the purposes of fulfilling this requirement. By passing waiver exams in fundamental and core courses a student may be waived out of--at most--four economics courses. However, since a waived trade or monetary course must be substituted with an economics elective, all students in the M.A. program ultimately end up taking at least 4 courses through the International Economics Program at SAIS. Oral Exam
All students must successfully pass the economics portion of the MA oral exam, which is normally given to students at the end of their academic program. Specializations
Students may opt to pursue a specialization within the International Economics Program while they are at SAIS. The following links outline the requirements for each of the three specializations.
