Degree Programs | Ph.D. Overview

The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program

  • Click here if you are a current SAIS Ph.D. student.

At SAIS, the Ph.D. Program is designed to produce a select group of highly qualified scholars and practitioners in international affairs with the interdisciplinary skills necessary to confront the complexities of the current international environment. By pursuing a course of study tailored to their intellectual interests, our doctoral students master the analytic tools of political science, economics, history and regional expertise essential to a comprehensive understanding of global challenges.

Through close collaboration with an accomplished faculty, supplemented by the resources of Washington, D.C., doctoral candidates work to create knowledge relevant to decision makers in the international arena. The SAIS Ph.D. prepares graduates to assume leadership positions in government, research institutions, international organizations, the private sector and academia.
