Degree Programs | Joint-Degree and Exchange Programs

SAIS offers several options, both formal and ad hoc, for students interested in pursuing a second graduate or professional degree in conjunction with their studies in international relations. In all cases, the following criteria apply: Students must be admitted separately to each school, satisfying the admissions requirements of both institutions. Students interested in pursuing joint degrees from SAIS and a two-year program must either apply to the schools simultaneously or be admitted to the second school by the end of their first year at the first school. Students interested in pursuing joint SAIS and law degrees must apply simultaneously to each school, apply to the law school before completion of the first year of the SAIS degree program or apply to SAIS before the second year of law study has been completed.

Some students participating in dual-degree programs will spend three semesters in residence as full-time students at SAIS, and some will be required to complete the full four-semester M.A. program. This residency requirement may be satisfied by studying at the SAIS campus in Washington, D.C., or by studying at the Bologna Center for one or two semesters. Joint-degree students interested in spending two semesters in Bologna should be certain that all program and graduation requirements can be met with only one semester in residence at the Washington, D.C., campus.

The formal dual-degree programs lead to an M.A. in international relations from SAIS combined with:

  • Master of Business Administration degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

  • Master of Business Administration degree from the Tuck School at Dartmouth

  • Master of Health Science degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

  • Juris Doctorate degree from Stanford University Law School

  • Juris Doctorate degree from University of Virginia School of Law

  • Master of Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs of Syracuse University

Ad Hoc Joint-Degree Programs

Registration Form - The Joint-Degree Form should be mailed or faxed (202.663.7788) to the Director of Admissions and Student Affairs at SAIS after you have been admitted both to SAIS and to the other school in your joint program. You will also need to include a copy of your admission letter from the other graduate program.
