SAIS Bologna Center History and Overview

Now in its sixth decade of operation, the SAIS Bologna Center—the leading American graduate school for international affairs in Europe—offers a unique educational environment that distinguishes it from typical exchange or joint multi-institution programs.

In 1955 a small group of scholars, led by C. Grove Haines, founded the Bologna Center. Their goal was to educate future leaders to reach beyond national boundaries and biases, and to work cooperatively toward common international goals in the post-war period—a time when the world needed rebuilding and uniting.

Home to the oldest university in Europe, Bologna’s tradition of education, cultural heritage, and political vitality made it an attractive location for SAIS’ European branch. Today, the Bologna Center operates in its own recently renovated and state of the art facility, adjacent to, but independent from, the University of Bologna.

The Bologna Center has a core of resident faculty who maintain continuity, assure curriculum quality, relevance, and coherence, and provide continual student mentoring. This core group is augmented by annually appointed senior visiting scholars and by a large contingent of adjunct professors drawn from a dozen of Europe’s leading universities and institutes. In a typical year, students can choose from more than 60 course offerings.

The relatively small size of the student body—numbering just under 200—and the extraordinarily broad international diversity—with over 35 countries represented each year—help students to develop the ability to communicate across national borders and cultures, while fostering a sense of community and collaboration among the nations of the world. Today the Bologna Center has more than 6,000 alumni representing more than 100 nationalities.
