Center can be a challenge for some students. Here, we show you a
basic tuition and housing fee break-down for your time at the Hopkins-Nanjing
Center and ways to finance this year in Nanjing.
You'd be interested to know that we offer a substantial financial
aid program including grants, based on a combination of merit and
need, and student loans. To qualify for financial aid, please fill
in the Financial
Aid application form, which is part of the application. Applications
received by the February 1 deadline will be given first priority

Tuition and Fees
The cost of the Hopkins-Nanjing Center's Certificate program is
comparable to other Chinese language programs in China. The Master's
degree is the same as a SAIS Master's degree. The Center is unique
in offering social sciences coursework taught to students in their
target language. The Center offers a language utilization program,
not a language program. In many cases a year in Nanjing is far cheaper
than a year of graduate school in the U.S. The Center delivers a
strong product, both in terms of its academic program, its study
and living facilities, its career development and its alumni network.
Costs for the 2007-08 academic year are:
| Tuition, Certificate |
$18,500 |
| Tuition, M.A. |
$31,300 |
| Housing, Certificate |
$1,000 |
| Housing, M.A., single occupancy |
$2,000 |
| Housing, M.A., double occupancy |
$1,000 |
| Health Insurance (estimated) |
$ 1,400 |
| Matriculation Fee (non-refundable) |
$ 500 |
Note: All prices are estimates
and subject to change. The school reserves the right to change information
contained on this website without prior notice.
Additional Expenses:
- International Airfare
- Board (estimated at around $7/day)
- Personal and Living Expenses
Johns Hopkins health insurance is mandatory for all international
students without comparable coverage. Tuition bills are mailed in
July and November. Tuition fees are due by the beginning of classes
each semester.
The cost of living in Nanjing is low compared to the U.S., or even compared to Beijing and Shanghai. The amount individual students need to live will vary greatly depending on their habits and preferences, so it is difficult to predict precisely how much money an individual student will need to bring. Things which influence the cost of living are frequency of eating outside the Center (especially at foreign restaurants such as McDonald's) and the frequency and style of any travelling done during breaks.

Fellowships and Loans
Fellowships
The Hopkins-Nanjing Center has a substantial financial aid budget
to support students who have both financial need and academic merit.
The goal is to make the Center affordable to students with the qualifications
to contribute to and benefit from the academic programs in Nanjing.
Full endowed scholarships provide aid equal to the total attendance,
while partial scholarships cover differing levels of need such as
tuition, housing, living or other expenses. No student will be turned
away for financial reasons.
In 2007-08, 96% of students requesting financial aid received support
from the Center. This support was made possible due to generous
donations from companies, foundations and individuals such as:
The Freeman Foundation
The Starr Foundation
The J. T. Tai Foundation
The Citigroup Foundation
The Hassenfeld Family
Alumni of the Center (The Alumni Fund)
Friends and family of former faculty member James Townsend

* Center fellowships are available to citizens of all countries
except PRC, Hong Kong and Taiwanese citizens.
Federal Loans
Federal direct loans are available to U.S. students who demonstrate
need as calculated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA). The FAFSA may be completed online at vwww.fafsa.ed.gov.
Paper copies of the application are typically available at your
local library or university.
Loans are handled through the Department of Education Direct Lending program in which loan money is dispersed directly to the University without banks or guaranteeing agencies. Loan amounts will show on the bill as a credit and refund checks will be mailed from SAIS within a month of the beginning of classes, assuming all paperwork is complete.

Other Financial Aid Resources
There are many organizations which can provide funding for your
studies. We encourage you to look for additional funding. You should,
however, begin applying for these fellowships as soon as possible
since many organizations require that you apply months in advance
of attending graduate school.
