February 1: Submit HSK, TOEFL and GRE scores if required.

February 1: Submit all application materials, including academic evaluations and transcripts.

The application deadline is February 1. We encourage applicants to submit their applications prior to this date, if possible, so that we have time to send notifications of missing materials.

The Selection Committee will notify applicants of its decision by March 15. Those who are accepted and who intend to enroll must submit a non-refundable matriculation fee of $500.00 to reserve their place. Orientation materials will be sent by June 1.

The Language Proficiency Examinations

All applicants are required to take either the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) or Center for Applied Linguistics Chinese (CAL) proficiency test. Applicants scoring below the required minimum may still be admitted on a case-by-case basis, but will likely be required to meet additional requirements, such as retaking a Chinese language proficiency test or attending a summer language program, prior to matriculation at the Center. Students with lower scores who intend to have further study between taking the test and enrolling in the program should inform us of this in their applications, as it can play a role in our decision.

Chinese Language Requirements for Admission

  CAL Exam HSK Exam
Certificate Score of 90 and above Pass HSK 5 Exam
Master of Arts Score of 110 and above Pass HSK 6 Exam

Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) Proficiency Test

The CAL test is used as one measure of Chinese competence for admission to the Hopkins-Nanjing Center. It is composed of three sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension and grammar/structure. The test is presented in both complex and simplified characters so that the applicant can use whichever s/he is more comfortable with. It is a multiple-choice machine-scored test which takes about three hours to administer. Applicants who decide to take the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) Chinese proficiency test should contact the Hopkins-Nanjing Center Washington Office to request test materials. The applicant should select a proctor (a professor or supervisor at work) to administer the test and submit the Chinese proficiency test form. Upon receipt of this form, the Washington Office sends the test to the proctor and the proctor returns the test to Washington for scoring immediately after it has been administered. A score of 90 out of 150 is required for admission to the certificate program. A score of 110 or above is required for admissions to the master's program.

We have found students are generally pleasantly surprised by their score. We hope that all interested students will take the test to gauge their level rather than assuming their langauge abilty is not high enough. You may know more than you think!

If you wish to request a CAL test, please mail or fax your completed CAL Test Request Form along with your $75 application fee ($90 for paper applications) to the attention of Elizabeth Bestani at:
