Building for the Future:
The Hopkins-Nanjing Center Samuel Pollard Building
Since opening in the Fall of 1986, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for
Chinese and American Studies remains a pioneer in the field of U.S.-China
educational exchange. On the eve of our 20th anniversary, the Center
launched a new Master of Arts in International Studies, the first
fully-accredited joint academic adventure of its kind between leading
Chinese and American universities. This innovative graduate degree
program builds on the successful graduate Certificate program at
the Center, a well-known fixture in Sino-American relations.
In order to accomodate continued growth and demand, and to keep
pace with the changes in China and the increasing importance of
the U.S.-China relationship, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center expanded
in 2006, upgrading its facilities with a $19 million state-of-the
art construction and renovation project. The new 10-story building
has added 100,000 square feet of classroom, library, office, and
residential space as well as a new auditorium and conference center.
In addition, new lounge and meeting spaces were created and dormitory
capacity was increased significantly. The Samuel Pollard Building
has been called one of the finest academic buildings in China.

The Samuel Pollard Building
The new facility has:
- Created new housing for our master's students and expanded faculty.
- Doubled the library collection capacity to 200,000 volumes.
- Created a conference center capable of hosting international
and domestic events.
- Created classroom space sufficient for both the certificate
program and master's degree program.
- Enhanced the visibility of The Johns Hopkins University's footprint
in China.
